Help! Waarom bromt mijn pomp of groeien mijn plantjes niet?

Help! Why is my pump buzzing or my plants not growing?

Troubleshooting Guide for your Bioome Smart Garden

Your Bioome Smart Garden is a marvel of engineering, but sometimes it needs a little love. Is the pump suddenly making noise? Or are your basil plants staying small and yellow? Don't panic. In 90% of cases, these are simple problems you can solve within 2 minutes. Here's the diagnosis from our experts.

Problem 1: The Pump is Making Noise

The complaint: You hear a buzzing, gurgling, or slurping sound.

The Cause: Dry Running

A pump in hydroponics must be completely submerged to function properly. If the water level drops, the pump starts drawing in air. This is called cavitation. It not only sounds annoying, but it's also bad for the motor.

The Solution:

  1. Check the Display: Is the "Low Water" light on?

  2. Refill: Pour water into the tank up to the 'Max' line (4 liters).

  3. Wait a moment: The pump will self-prime and become quiet again.

Bioome Tip: Don't wait until the light comes on. Refill your tank weekly. This keeps the pump always quiet and cool.

Problem 2: My Plants are Growing Slowly (or Turning Yellow)

The complaint: Growth is stagnant, leaves are turning light green or yellow, or the plant looks 'flimsy'.

This is usually a matter of Water Quality. Since you don't use soil, water is the only source of life. If something is wrong with it, you'll see it immediately.

Cause A: Too 'Hard' Water (Nutrient Lockout)

In the Netherlands, we often have 'hard' tap water (lots of lime/calcium). This disrupts the pH value.

  • The Consequence: If the pH becomes too high (> 6.5), a Nutrient Lockout occurs. The roots "close off" from nutrients. You can add as much nutrition as you want, the plant cannot absorb it.

The Solution:

  • The 'Reset': Empty the tank and refill it with fresh water.

  • The Pro-Tip: Do you have very hard water in your region? Try mixing with filtered water (e.g., from a Brita pitcher) or rainwater. This lowers the EC value and makes nutrients absorbable again.

Cause B: Nutrient Balance (Hunger or Overdose)

Plants need food, but not too much.

  • Too little (Low EC): Plants are light green and grow slowly. They are hungry.

  • Too much (High EC): Leaf tips turn brown and curl up ("Nutrient Burn"). The plant dehydrates due to salt stress.

The Solution:

Trust the Bioome system.

  1. Wait for the Nutrient light (every 2 weeks).

  2. Always use the included A&B nutrients. These are perfectly balanced to prevent pH problems. Do not experiment with regular Pokon!

Cause C: Roots without Oxygen

Healthy roots are white. Brown, slimy roots mean root rot. This is caused by lack of oxygen.

The Solution:

Check if the pump is running (you'll see water movement). The Bioome pump should be on for 15 minutes and off for 1 hour 45 minutes. This cycle introduces oxygen into the water. Is the water too warm (> 24°C)? Then place your Smart Garden in a cooler spot, not in direct sunlight.

Data: The "Healthy Plant" Checklist

In doubt? Check these values. Your Bioome largely manages this itself, but it's good to know what's happening.

Parameter Ideal Value What you see when something is wrong Solution
Water Level Full (4L) Noisy pump Refill
pH Value 5.5 – 6.5 Yellow leaves (Lockout) Change water
Temperature 18°C – 24°C Brown roots (Rot) Find cooler spot
Light 10 hours on Leggy, tall plants Lower lamp

Conclusion: You're in Charge

Problems in a Smart Garden are rarely fatal. Because hydroponics works so quickly, plants also recover very quickly once you solve the problem.

  • Pump making noise? Add water.

  • Yellow leaves? Fresh water in.

It's that simple. The Bioome Smart Garden is designed to be robust. With a little attention and this guide, you'll enjoy a perfect harvest 365 days a year.
